Mohawk Daltile Toronto

For this ambitious conversion of a 5,000 square foot commercial tenancy into one of North America’s greenest showrooms, McLennan http://mclennan-design.com and CLA collaborated, with CLA serving as the Ontario-registered Architect of Record and McLennan as design lead. The Clients – who were themselves a partnership between Mohawk Group (specializing in carpet and hard surface flooring) and Daltile (specializing in ceramic and stone tile) – wanted a beautiful and healthful space to showcase their offerings, many of which were certified to meet Declare (transparency in sourcing, ingredients and life cycle) and the Living Product certification programs (products wholly rethought for a positive impact) for transparency, non-toxicity, and innovative manufacturing.

The showroom itself was designed to, and is currently seeking certification for, the WELL Well Building Standard, and multiple Petal certifications (Place, Health + Happiness, Materials, Equity and Beauty) under the International Living Future Institute’s Living Building Challenge. This ambitious program challenges designers to select and vet products carefully to ensure responsible sourcing, low or zero volatile organic components (VOCs) and the avoidance of all worst-in-class chemicals on the Red List. In these brightly lit and thoroughly accessible spaces, the Clients can showcase their products while demonstrating a commitment to health and environment.
